Le Salon
Balzac’s novel, La Rabouilleuse, issued in English as The Black Sheep, was published post-revolution in 1842. One of his characters, Phillippe Bridau, a former officer in Bonaparte's army, travels to New York and what Balzac has to say about the city applies as well today.
